In their natural habitats, reptiles, amphibians and other animals that we keep in terrariums absorb the vitamins, minerals and trace elements necessary for their survival through their diet. While we do our best to provide a diet close to their natural regimen in captivity, we don't quite achieve this. For example, when we feed them crickets or locusts, these food animals do NOT come from the natural food sources of our terrarium animals, meaning our animals do not have their natural diet. Due to cost reasons, food animals often receive little or no proper nourishment, or only poor-quality food, unlike in their natural environments. A well-known example is that of poison dart frogs which lose their toxicity in captivity because they no longer have access to certain ants for food. The frogs don't mind, and we can even breed them without any issue in the terrarium, but the toxicity related to their diet is lost.
