Anaerobic denitrification. For low-flow filtration. De*Nitrate is an economical, natural, porous material that promotes aerobic nitrification in the first few millimeters of depth and anaerobic denitrification at the core. The material has a large surface area and supports a high density of bacteria. Although it can be an excellent support for aerobic nitrification, its main role is the removal of nitrates under anaerobic conditions, a process identical to that of nitrate removal by living rocks. As in the case of living rock, the oxygen-poor environment is necessary for anaerobic work.
